Recognize and Avoid Workplace Sand Traps
Golfers who want to stay on top of their game will study the course, including the hazards to avoid, such as sand traps. Likewise, to be on top of your job, you need to identify and avoid workplace sand traps— all those unsafe conditions and acts that lead to accidents. To identify job hazards, ask yourself questions like these:
- Could something in the work area make a person slip, trip, or fall?
- Could something in the workplace fall on someone?
- Am I using the right personal protective equipment for the job?
- Are those materials properly stacked and stored?
- Could something in the area make the hazardous substance I’m working with catch fire or explode?
- Is there adequate ventilation in the area to remove toxic vapors?
- Am I lifting correctly to prevent injury to my back?
- Is an emergency exit, aisle, or stairway blocked?
- Am I focusing on the job without getting distracted?
- Is a piece of equipment not working properly?
- Have I chosen the right tool for the job, and am I using it the right way?
Look for hazards before you work and keep looking as you work. Take steps to avoid workplace sand traps—and you’ll have a winning safety score.
