Shipping Dock Supervisor/Dispatcher
JOB SUMMARY:
To coordinate shipping and customer delivery activities from the company's shipping dock, directing company-employed over-the-road truck drivers and drawing on outside trucks, trailers, and transportation services as needed.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Interviews and offers jobs to qualified candidates for over-the-road truck driver openings. Arranges for substance abuse screening, checks references, DOT licensing, and motor vehicle records and, after conditional job offer, arranges for company physical examination.
- Meets each afternoon with production planning team to plan deliveries for next shipping day. Develops driver schedule accordingly, drawing on outside trucks and drivers as needed. Interviews potential suppliers of outside truck and driver services.
- Supervises two group leaders and a shipping clerk in administering shipping department. Spot-checks loading patterns of finished goods for neat stacking, banding, and undamaged product.
- Rides with driver on first delivery to new customers. Meets customers' receiving personnel and notes any particular customer delivery or shipping needs.
- Through group leaders, supervises forklift truck deliveries of finished goods from assembly line or warehouse area. Group leaders arrange for forklift truck repairs by forklift mechanic in maintenance department.
- Approves overtime for drivers and shipping support personnel. Directs equalization of drivers' overtime per requirements of union contract.
- During slack periods, assigns forklift operators, and loaders to other duties like baling scrap paper and cardboard, and repairing pallets and skids.
- Directs individual drivers to report for random substance abuse screening test when advised by human resources department. Takes disciplinary action with drivers who test positive or refers them to company-designated EAP.
- Oversees work of shipping clerk who prepares bills of lading for shipment to customers, obtaining optimum freight rates, handling of less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments, etc.
- Conducts tours of shipping department activities for visiting customers.
- Checks count of returned products from customers and advises quality control department of returned goods.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITY:
- Current commercial driver's license (CDL) clean state motor vehicle truck operator's record. Successful result of random substance abuse screening.
- Experience in supervising hourly personnel, customer contact, and effective relationships with staff and line department heads.
- Knowledge of truck freight rates.
